Rochester’s Favorite Sign of Spring: The Lilac Festival 🌸 header image.
Every spring, the city of Rochester transforms into a sea of purple, pink, white, and lavender blooms as thousands of visitors gather in Highland Park for one of the most beloved traditions in Western New York, the Rochester Lilac Festival. What started as a simple community gathering more than a century ago has grown into one of the largest and most iconic flower festivals in North America, drawing over 500,000 visitors each year. The Rochester Lilac Festival has also just been named the #2 best flower festival in the nation according to the Lilac Festival official website!

The Rochester Lilac Festival is deeply connected to the history of Highland Park itself. In the late 1800s, Rochester horticulturists George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry donated land to create what would become Highland Park, designed by legendary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the same designer behind New York City’s Central Park. Beginning in the 1890s, horticulturist John Dunbar began planting lilac bushes throughout the park, eventually creating what is now recognized as the largest collection of lilacs in North America, featuring more than 500 varieties and approximately 1,200 lilac shrubs.

The festival itself dates back to 1898, when thousands of Rochester residents gathered informally in Highland Park simply to admire the blooming lilacs. That gathering quickly became an annual tradition and officially evolved into the Rochester Lilac Festival in the early 1900s. What began as a one-day celebration has since expanded into the massive 10-day event Rochester knows and loves today.

More Than Just Flowers

While the lilacs remain the star of the show, today’s festival has become much more than a flower celebration. The modern Rochester Lilac Festival combines live music, local food vendors, artisan markets, parades, races, family activities, and community events into one unforgettable experience. Festival-goers can spend the day walking through blooming gardens before grabbing a local favorite from one of the many food stands or enjoying concerts from regional and national performers.

Some of the festival’s most popular traditions include:
  • The annual Lilac Parade
  • The Lilac 5K & 10K Run
  • Art in the Park
  • Guided walking tours through Highland Park
  • Local farmers markets
  • Family and children’s activities
  • Live music performances throughout the festival grounds
One of the reasons Rochester residents love the festival so much is because it truly marks the unofficial start of spring and festival season in Western New York. After a long Rochester winter, the Lilac Festival feels like the city coming back to life again.

What to Expect at the 2026 Rochester Lilac Festival

The 128th Rochester Lilac Festival will take place from May 8–17, 2026 at Highland Park. This year’s festival is expected to feature many returning traditions along with expanded entertainment and community programming. Visitors can expect:

  • Free admission to the festival grounds
  • Live music daily
  • The Lilac Parade on May 9

Why the Lilac Festival Matters to Rochester

The Rochester Lilac Festival is more than just a tourist attraction, it’s part of Rochester’s identity. For generations, families have made yearly traditions around visiting Highland Park, taking photos under the blooming lilacs, attending concerts, or simply spending a spring afternoon outdoors together. It’s also a major boost for local businesses, artists, musicians, and vendors throughout the Rochester and Finger Lakes region. From restaurants and coffee shops to local artisans and small businesses, the festival helps showcase everything that makes Rochester unique.

Whether you’re a lifelong Rochester resident or visiting for the very first time, the Lilac Festival is one of those experiences that perfectly captures the spirit of Western New York: community-focused, welcoming, beautiful, and full of tradition. And honestly, there are few things more “Rochester” than finally feeling warm sunshine again while walking through Highland Park surrounded by blooming lilacs. 🌸
